Some Info About Australia’s Barrier Reef

The Barrier Reef is one of the natural wonders of the world running from the northern point of the country to just north of Brisbane. The great barrier reef stretches over 2000km along the countries coast.

The reef is home to well over 900 fish varieties, dolphins, turtles. An impressive amount of seabirds make their home in the area.

The coral which forms the reef itself is also a living creature, made up of 1000′s of tiny creatures. When it dies it turns white, and forms the structure for more coral growth. Different species of coral grow at different speeds, while some are quite fast to grow, some species take well over a hundred years to fully grow. The colours are not formed by the coral but by the growth of algae on it.

The reef lives in a tropical climate as it relies on warm nutrient rich water to survive. Salty water and lots of light is needed to maintain the health of the coral.

With hundreds of thousands of square miles of reef it is a diving and snorkelling mecca. Access through boat cruises are available from the towns all along the east coast. Even if you don’t go in the ocean you can see the marvels of the reef through reef viewing tours.

The reef is world heritage listed and extensive areas are protected from fishing and the taking of coral from the reef isn’t allowed to preserve it for generations to come.

The colourful and friendly capital of the far north, Cairns is full of exciting activities. Located in the centre of some of the most scenically beautiful and ecologically important areas in the world, Cairns is the obvious gateway to the natural riches of rainforest, tablelands, outback, and The Great Barrier Reef. My word on the worlds top diving sites.

Because I am a travel writer, Isometimes get asked what are my favourite dive sites. Here they are as I rate them.

1. The Maldives

The best way to experience this island paradise is on a live-aboard dive cruise: you can do as many as four dives a day and it works out good economically. From May until October you are pretty much guaranteed to see manta rays but they are there all year round. North Male Island and South Ari atoll provide reliably good diving around the atoll walls, with healthy and schooling game species as well as all the small colourful marine life you expect to see. The Maldives undoubtedly has the best all-round diving in the Indian Ocean, and to me the journey starts the moment I get picked up from the airport for a speedboat ride to the dive boat.

All You Ever Wanted To Know About The Whitsunday Islands

You might have heard of the Whitsundays – beautiful Australian tropical islands with white sandy beaches and also coral reefs. Maybe you’ve been to a resort on one of the islands, or taken a flight or a cruise from Shute Harbour. All the year circular, many visitors come from worldwide, as well as coming from all Australian states and territories to enjoy the beaches, the reefs, the fishing and many other pastimes. Whether it be to relax within the beach or to benefit from the adrenalin rush of sky-diving, the Whitsundays provide all of this and more.

Shute Harbour is exactly that, a harbour for your island cruises, including a vehicle ferry. There is a secure multi-story carpark to leave your car as long as you’re away, or you can catch a bus from your park. There is, however, an excellent lookout, just above the harbour, and easily accessible through road. This is provided with the Lions, and has parking for big rigs, while you take your photos from the Whitsunday Passage.

Airlie Beach does not have much of a seashore, as such. Visitors always ask, “where are the Whitened Sandy Beaches? “. Unfortunately, the answer is only within the Islands. The mainland beaches are coarse yellow sand, or mud. Shingley Beach, doesn’t have shingle sometimes – more mud, or, to be kind, coarse grey sand. This is probably due to well set out extensive marina inside the bay there, no doubt an advantageous alternative.

Another marina is being developed round the headland, and certainly it will appear great when completed, but we felt sorry for the people in the holiday resort hotels and apartments who had paid for their ocean view.

Our site was backing onto the tiny Whitsunday airport, with planes and heli flights to and through the islands, and for sky-diving, from early morning till dusk. Fortunately not at night time! Having spent three years within the RAF back in home buying of National Service, it was an acquainted sound, and didn’t disturb me by any means, I heard no claims from other visitors sometimes.

The Town of Whitsunday includes Airlie Beach, Shute Harbour, and couple of other places, all in close closeness, so any park is handy to the island cruises and ocean
excursions. There are lots of palm and other tropical trees including, in the location known as Flametree, of course, flame trees, all around. .
